~NURSE KAYE

WHILE WE WERE AT OU MEDICAL CENTER/PRESBYTERIAN TOWERS, I CALLED IT
OUR "MISSIONARY HOSPITAL". THERE ARE PEOPLE REPRESENTED FROM ALL OVER
THE WORLD WORKING THERE. THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, WHICH I DID NOT KNOW
ABOUT, GIVES SCHOLARSHIPS TO PEOPLE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO COME HERE
AND OBTAIN LICENSES TO BE RN'S, DOCTOR'S, RADIOLOGIST'S....WHATEVER THEY
ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING AND AFTER 5 YEARS THEY CAN APPLY FOR
CITIZENSHIP OR THEY TAKE THEIR KNOWLEDGE BACK TO THEIR HOME LANDS
AND WORK THERE. WE HAD NURSES AND TECHS FROM THE SOVIET UNION,
UKRAINE, BOLIVIA, NEW GUINEA, ALL AREAS OF AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, CZECH
REPUBLIC, JAMAICA, AND SO MANY MORE BUT I CANNOT SPELL THEM ALL.
THEY MUST APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP AND THEY ONLY ACCEPT FIVE
APPLICANTS. FOR MANY OF THESE PEOPLE IT IS AT A HIGH COST OF NOT
BEING ABLE TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES FOR YEARS IF EVER.
THEY ALSO HAD WORKERS THROUGHOUT THE HOSPITAL WHO HAD
DISABILITIES THAT I AM SURE A LOT OF BUSINESSES WOULD NOT EVEN
GIVE A CHANCE.
I KNOW THE DOCTORS IN MY TOWN....SOME NOT ALL....WOULD GO ON A TRYANT
IF THEY WERE IN THE ROOM TALKING TO A PATIENT AND THE HOUSEKEEPER
WALKS IN AND SAYS I AM HERE TO CLEAN YOUR ROOM AND STARTS GRABBING
THE TRASH......WHEN I BECAME A NURSE AND EVEN WHEN I WAS AN AIDE AND
AT THE HOSPITALS HERE TODAY, YOU NEVER ENTER THE ROOM WITHOUT
KNOCKING AND NEVER EVER STAY IN THE ROOM IF THE DR. IS THERE.....UNLESS
YOU ARE THE NURSE MAKING ROUNDS.
THESE DRS. JUST TALK OVER WHATEVER IS GOING ON IN THE ROOM....
VERY ODD.

NURSE KAYE WAS ONE OF AMY'S NURSES. OUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF HER WAS NOT
VERY GOOD. SHE WAS AMY'S NURSE THE SECOND DAY AMY WAS OUT OF ICU.
SHE CAME INTO THE ROOM AND THERE WERE FOUR OF US IN THERE PLUS AMY.
ME AND MY DH AND LEILA AND HER DH. SHE ASKED AMY A QUESTION AND
KORBIE, LEILA'S HUSBAND SAYS, "SHE CAN'T TALK!" SHE SPUN AROUND AND GAVE
HIM THE EYE LOOK AND SAID, "I KNOW THAT!" AND WE WEREN'T GIVING HER
WHAT SHE THOUGHT SHOULD BE THE RIGHT ANSWERS AND SHE LEFT, STATING
SHE WOULD JUST HAVE TO READ THE CHART.....AND SHE HAD 5 PATIENTS AND
SHE JUST COULDN'T BE IN AMY'S ROOM THAT MUCH.
ABOUT THAT TIME THE DR. CAME IN AND WE TOLD HIM WHAT HAD TRANS-
PIRED AND I WAS QUITE UPSET STILL BECAUSE AMY HAD A TRACH. IT WAS
NOT AMY'S FAULT SHE HAD FIVE PATIENTS AND I WAS GOING TO MAKE SURE
SHE WAS TAKEN CARE OFF.
THE FLOOR SUPERVISOR CAME IN AND FOR ABOUT THREE HOURS WAS DOING
THINGS FOR AMY AND WAS BUZZING UP AND DOWN THE HALL.

NURSE KAY is IN HER EARLY 60'S. A BEAUTIFUL LADY WITH A HAIR CUT LIKE the
PICTURE OF THE MANNEQUIN ABOVE.....ONLY HER HAIR WAS BEAUTIFUL SHADE OF
RED....MORE TOWARD THE MAROON SIDE THAN ORANGE. HER MAKE-UP WAS
PERFECT. SHE WORE BEAUTIFUL EARRINGS THAT MATCHED HER BRIGHTLY
COLORED UNIFORMS. SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL LADY.
AS THE NIGHT WENT BY WE GOT TO KNOW ~NURSE KAYE. HER HUSBAND
HAD PASSED AWAY YEARS EARLIER....SHE RETIRED FROM HER ACCOUNTING JOB
AT AGE 59 TO GO TO R.N. SCHOOL. SHE IS AN ANIMAL LOVER......VERY FUNNY
AND LOVES PEOPLE. AT THE END OF HER SHIFT I CALLED THE SUPERVISOR
INTO THE ROOM AND TOLD HER I WANTED TO FILL OUT A REPORT ON KAYE....
I TOLD HER SHE WAS AN AWESOME NURSE INSIDE AND OUT AND NOT ONLY
DID I LIKE HER BUT SO DID AMY. OUR LIVES WERE BLESSED BY NURSE
KAYE. SHE IS JUST VERY SPECIAL.
HAVING BEEN A NURSE I KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS TO NOT GET AN
AN ACCURATE REPORT AND IT IS HARD TO TAKE CARE OF THE PATIENT IF
THE ORDERS YOU WERE GIVEN ARE NOT CLEAR...........BUT THE PATIENT MUST
NOT PAY THE PRICE.
I AM SO VERY GLAD WE GAVE NURSE KAYE A SECOND CHANCE AND DID NOT GO
WITH OUR FIRST IMPRESSION. SOME PEOPLE ARE CONS AND CAN MAKE YOU FEEL
COMFORTABLE RIGHT AWAY BUT IN THE END YOU ARE DECEIVED.......THE TRUE
PERSON IS FOUND OUT.
AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DO IT HEARTILY, AS TO THE LORD AND NOT TO MEN, KNOWING
THAT FROM THE LORD YOU WILL RECEIVE THE REWARD OF INHERITANCE; FOR
YOU SERVE THE LORD CHRIST.
~COLOSSIANS 3: 23-24

THE HOSPICE NURSE CAME TO SEE AMY TODAY. SHE ASSESSED HER AND WENT
OVER HER MEDICINES. TOMORROW the AIDE WILL COME TO GIVE HER A
BATH. AMY HAS SLEPT ALL DAY UNTIL ABOUT 8:00 PM TONIGHT.
MY DAD CAME TO SEE HER TODAY. WE TRIED TO WAKE HER UP BUT SHE SLEPT
THE WHOLE TIME. SHE RECEIVED 3 CARDS TODAY AND SHE READ THEM TONIGHT.
EVERY CARD IS SO UNIQUE AND MEANS SO MUCH........CHAR FROM PHOENIX SENT
HER AN ADORABLE CARD......IT HAD STYLISH BLUE JEANS OUT OF BLUE JEAN
MATERIAL WITH A RUFFLE ON THE PANTS.....AMY IS VERY INTO UNIQUE
FASHION USUALLY THAT SHE DESIGNS HERSELF.
DORIS, THANK YOU FOR THE CARD YOU SENT RICHIE.....HE DIDN'T LET ME READ IT
BUT HE SAID, THAT IS VERY, VERY NICE. YOU TOUCHED HIM.
I WANT TO LET EACH ONE OF YOU KNOW THERE ARE THANK YOU CARDS COMING.
BUT EVEN WITH A THANK YOU CARD I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO THANK YOU ALL
FOR YOUR KINDNESS. IT JUST MAKES ME CRY.
TOMORROW IS THE COOK OUT FOR AMY WITH HER FRIENDS. THAT WAS ONE
OF HER GOALS. PRAY THAT SHE WILL BE AWAKE AND CAN ENJOY THE EVENING.
PRAYER REQUESTS.......ASHLEY, TAMMY, SHERRY'S FOOT, JEAN, PATRICIA, JAY,
RACHEL, DORIS AND RICHARD, BRANDON, TAWNA, PAM, SALLY, CONNIE,
LEILA, JENNIFER AND HER CAT, SAMMY MY DOG, MY MOTHER PEGGY, ROY
AND ELISABETH, KIPPIE, AJ AND IRENE, KATHERINE
FOR THE LORD COMFORTS HIS PEOPLE AND WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON HIS
AFFLICTED ONES.
~ISAIAH 49: 13
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SPENDING SOME OF YOUR TIME
HERE AT THERE'S AN ANGEL ON MY PORCH.
IT MEANS SO VERY MUCH WHEN YOU STOP BY. YOU ARE SO SPECIAL.

  2. I am so glad I was staying up tonight and got to see your post so quickly. I'm happy Nurse Kaye turned out to be good and I am impressed that the hospital has people from all over the world there to learn and contribute.

But my main thoughts are on Amy, of course. I have been wondering about the cook-out, whether the weather would cooperate or just what might happen. I hope Amy will feel well enough to be awake part of the time. I do remember my aunt wanted me to put together a little dinner party and at the time of the party, we didn't think she was really very awake, but the next day, she went over and over the party, very contented, as she had just wanted to have friends and family around her but didn't want to interact so she kept her eyes shut -- but she was taking it all in. To enjoy later.

I had planned to mail a card today but went out and the car battery was completely drained, what a shock. So no errands till the morning when I can get a jump.

I'll be thinking of you, Amy, and your family/friends tomorrow, also Sammy, he's such a good dog and I love that picture of him, your little greeter, and I hope he feels better quickly.

  6. Debbie thank you so much for remembering my Rachel. She is doing fine, gaining strength everyday and starting to get back into a normal life again. You are so inspirational and I know you are doing what any mom would do. No one knows the heartache of having a sick child. I didn't know you were a nurse too. Sherry has been wonderful. God bless.

  9. Good Morning My Precious Sister,
I wish I could have met Nurse Kaye, as she sounds like someone I too, would have loved. I am just thankful that she was good to Amy and you guys. That is what I prayed for the whole time, for the nurses and Dr.s to bless you all in ways we could not even imagine. (You know not just physically help Amy, but also help you all emmotionally.) This has been such a strain on your hearts and your minds too. When a family member gets cancer, they suffer physically and emmotionally, but the family does also. The love of a family is shared in sickness and in health, just like our wedding vows with our spouses.

I pray for Amy to have a wonderful time this evening and that she will be awake for some part of it. That it will be a wonderful memory for all of you to share. Please take some pics for me and email them to me. I would so love to be there too. Who all is coming?

Give me Amy Girl a BIG hug for me. Remind her how much I love her. She will always be so special in my heart, and you know her giggle is tattooed in my heart.

I am so happy Daddy came to see Amy yesterday. I know that was very hard for him. He is so trying. It just breaks his heart. If nothing else, it was a comfort to you. Please be patient with Moma. She is trying and she too loves Amy so much Debbie. I wish I could be there for all of you. We will be leaving for home Sept. 30th. and be there through October 17th.

Have a wonderful day today my precious Sister. I am off today and we are going to Phillips house around lunch. If you need me call me cell honey, I will have it turned on. I found out that when I went to the Dr. on Wednesday I turned my phone off, as they request that, then I went to the Ortho place, again phones turned off, and by the time I got through there and starting for home (almost 4 hours later) I did not turn my phone back on, it had been shut off every since. I haven't heard any phone calls from the cell because it wasn't on. I am so, sorry. I have it turned on now.

Talk to you soon. I love you and miss you terribly. You are so precious to me. Never forget that. We will always have each other. I love you, Sherry

  10. Thinking of Amy and the cookout - hope everything goes beautifully! I love the story about Nurse Kay. So often, our first impressions are wrong and if we just give the situation some time, we learn positive things about the person.

  13. Hi Debbie

How many times has that proven to be true that first impressions are not always what you think. I am glad to hear that the nurse turned out to be so sweet. I will join the others in prayer that Amy is able to enjoy her cook out. Her eyes may be closed but her spirit will take it in. May you all be blessed today....Debbie

  14. Debbie, I hope that Amy and the rest of you are enjoying a wonderful cookout about now. In the circumstances you were facing, I think it took a lot on YOUR part to give the nurse a second chance. Glad she turned out to be a nice person. I'm still praying here in Arkansas. God be with all of you. laurie
